The Point Loma Outfitting Story
Point Loma Outfitting's story begins nearly 50 years ago when Co-Founder, Tom Carruthers first sailed the harsh Great Lakes near his family's summer home in northern Michigan. Since then, Tom has spent his life sailing and racing, gaining a reputation for his excellent boating skills, sharp sense of humor, and love of the water. His raced includes the Mackinacs (16 times), SORCs, MORCs, Canada's Cups, and America's Cups.
For Co-Founder and wife, Katie Carruthers, it was the pools of Southern Cal where her love for the water grew. Swimming quickly became a fervent passion of hers and led to her racing in pools across the country, and eventually to UCLA's pool as a member of the school's swim team. Her success led to qualifying for the Olympic trials and school records at the university that are still standing today.
After meeting at a regatta, Katie and Tom joined lives and have made the bays and coasts of San Diego the base of their water operations. They've sailed here, raced here, and even pioneered sailing education here. Naturally, their passion for water sports and innovative attitudes led to Point Loma Outfitting, a store specializing in the best apparel for life on the water. Since it's founding in 2008, the store has excelled in outfitting customers with clothing and accessories by premier brands for not just water sports, but all outdoor activities and active lifestyles.
